After months of preparation the new Walmart Supercenter in Lucas is celebrating its grand opening.
Local citizens have been watching the progress of this new Walmart since the company broke ground on its construction in mid-2012. The new Walmart means jobs and tax revenue for the city of Lucas and with the population of Lucas increasing 80 percent from 2000-2010, the new store is likely to be an economic boost to the area.
As of right now, the store has created approximately 300 jobs for people in Lucas and the surrounding areas.
In addition to the usual features found in a Walmart, the new store features energy saving technology such as LED lights in signage, freezer cases and the parking lot, allowing 50 percent less energy to be used.
The store opened February 13 at 7:30 a.m. and according to one of the employees, the first purchase was ammunition.
