“Our community leaders must stay focused and committed to ensure our students continue the legacy of success that has become Lovejoy.”

The board of trustees welcomed new member Barrett Owens to the board last night. Earlier this year he was elected by a 6-0 vote, landing him trustee position 7.

“It’s a privilege to serve Lovejoy and the amazing people that make up this community and school district,” Owens said.

Owens has resided in the district since 2005 with his wife, Paige, and three children.

¨I am excited about his opportunity to serve the school, children and families in the Lovejoy community, ̈  Paige said.

Owens replaced trustee Scott Christiansen, who was on the board for seven years.

“Mr. Christiansen, a private equity attorney, retired from board service to devote more time to his family and his business interests,” president of the board of trustees Chad Collins said.

Owens went through a vetting process that included an application, five or more endorsements and an interview with the board of trustees.

“This process allowed the board of trustees to identify the top candidate out of seven applicants that the board felt would be a great addition, team fit, and serve our community well,” Collins said.

The school board’s goal is to hire people that match the district’s values specifically someone who is “forward-thinking” to help make their decisions, according to Collins.

“[We hire] due to their professional and personal leadership qualities, skills, and experiences along with their investment into our community and track record of service in and outside of Lovejoy ISD,” Collins said.

The school board must vote on their stance for a specific topic revolving around the school in order for them to make the best decisions.

“Our community leaders must stay focused and committed to ensure our students continue the legacy of success that has become Lovejoy” Owens said. “One Heart, One Lovejoy.”

Senior Kelsey Carroll has never owned a dog or a cat, but she’s the proud caretaker of two mini cacti living their life on her windowsill, and she thinks that’s just enough. She never forgets to water them weekly, as she’s a fond planner user who prides herself on writing down just about any task, even “write staff bio,” which she just proudly accomplished. When she’s not strumming twangy ukulele chords in her bedroom on the weekends or attempting to play a cello countermelody in class during the week, Kelsey can be found dancing to whatever plays in her earbuds (which are constantly on her) while editing photos until her laptop battery dies each night. Her days start before the sun’s up at swim team, and end with her furiously deciding which of her 16 pairs of Harry Potter socks to wear the next day. Whether she’s shooting sideline photos and dodging officials on the football field, or manning a jumbotron camera for the fans to see, Kelsey loves to be involved in any visual coverage she can get her hands on. Although she’s soft spoken, Kelsey hopes to share stories through her photos and writing as she tackles her roles as photographer, community editor, and social media editor during her fourth and final year on staff.
