Veterans day; a day of honor to the men and women that have fought for our country. Because many celebrations have been affected as a result of COVID-19, student council strays from their annual veterans dinner. In order to honor the veterans, the student council has put together bags for veterans in the community.
“The veterans day bags are being made for veterans in our area,” senior and student council president Lia Hopkinson said. “These bags are made in order to honor these great men and women that have fought and worked for our country.”
Although the student council cannot recognize the veterans like they usually do, they still manage to appreciate the veterans.
“We filled the [bags] with hand sanitizer, chapstick, mints, and thank you cards made by both student council and kids at the elementary schools,” senior and student council vice president Ashlyn Carty said.
Veterans in the community appreciate the recognition from neighbors and family.
“Veterans love when people thank [us] for our service,” Bob Poteet, a pilot who served in the air force for 23 years, said.
my doctor yesterday just thanked me for my service, and it was appreciated,”
Student council wants to honor the veterans every year in the best way possible and will continue to do so despite difficult circumstances.
“We know that the veterans’ in our community aren’t recognized enough, so every year we make sure to honor them the best we can,” Carty said. “They have done so much for us, it is the best we can do for them.”
