For the May 6 jazz band concert, saxophonist Sal Lozano and the Texas Instruments Jazz band will join students on stage. Last year’s concert with the TI Jazz Band featured Delfeayo Marsalis.

The jazz band will host special guests saxophonist Sal Lozano and the Texas Instruments Jazz Band (TI Jazz Band) for a jazz concert on Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. Last year’s concert with the TI Jazz Band featured Delfeayo Marsalis.

“We prepare our part of the concert to a very high level in hopes of being able to keep up with someone like Sal Lozano on a concert,” band director Paul Heuer said. “Getting to share the stage with a talent like this is very different from just listening to them on recordings.”

Special guest Sal Lozano is a member of the Grammy-award-winning Big Phat Band. Lozano has recorded with famous artists including Paul McCartney, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder and more. He is currently a professor of Saxophone at California State University. He conducts clinics and masterclasses across the country.

Lozano has played on numerous movie soundtracks including The Incredibles 2, Straight Outta Compton, LaLa Land, Sing, Joy, The Secret Life of Pets, Ice Age 5, National Treasure, Legally Blonde, Phineas and Ferb, the last three Star Trek movies and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

The TI Jazz Band is a full 18-piece band. The group has performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center, the Texas Jazz Festival, the Cancun Jazz Festival and the Montreux Jazz Festival. The band has hosted dozens of guest artists including Clark Terry, Phil Woods and John Pizzarelli.

The high school jazz band will play first. Then Sal will join on a couple of pieces. The TI Jazz Band will come out and play a set by themselves, and then Sal will join them. In the end, the high school band will join everyone on stage for one final tune for combined bands at the end.

“The students will also have a clinic on our music with him the day of the concert which is invaluable time with a musician of this caliber,” Heuer said. “Students are normally just playing with other students on a daily basis. This is a whole different level that will hopefully stay with our students.”
