Dressed in various shades of pink, men, women, children, brothers, sisters, grandparents, friends, uncles and aunts came together on Saturday, October 20th. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure foundation endured in their 30th annual fundraiser for the residents of Dallas County. Having the title of the largest annual fundraiser in the area, the Race for the Cure breast cancer organization brought in up to 22,000 participants who joined in the journey to fight against the disease.
“I have done this race for the last 4 years, and it feels very reassuring to know that people support the cause and that it creates awareness for other women,” breast cancer survivor Jorgenson said. “Being a survivor, well, it feels great. It feels really great. It’s just amazing with my two children, my husband, my family, and my friends, and having them all with me supporting me is just the best feeling.”
Seventy-five percent of the funds that were raised go towards breast cancer screening, treatment, and education programs in Dallas County, while the remaining twenty-five percent is commissioned for national scientific research that is used in the effort to find a cure.
For many people, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was an eye opening experience that made them look at life in a new way.
“This organization is one of a kind,” Jorgenson said. “It raises so much awareness and creates such a strong circle of support for the people like me who have fought, and survived the disease.”
