TRL’s James Mapes says that, “Rodrigo has the potential to be in the music industry for a long time because even though her new song “Deja Vu” didn’t hit record numbers on the chart like her song “Driver’s License,” it is a song that’s message of reflection will resonate with a variety of age demographics. “

Olivia Rodrigo is an 18-year-old American actress, as well as singer, who is most known for her roles on Disney Channel’s show “Bizaardvark,” and her breakout song “Driver’s License.” The song “Driver’s License” only took a week to hit No.1 on the charts, and during that time, it was the most used song on TikTok because of the viral trends that accompanied it.  Now, Olivia Rodrigo released her second single “Deja Vu,” but it was released the same day as other sought after music including Demi Lovato’s new album “Dancing with the Devil,” and Lil Nas X’s new single “Montero.”

“Deja Vu” is 3 minutes and 52 seconds long, and kicks off with a subtle, but up-beat, guitar melody. The melody is simple and catchy with the sound of bells and echoing of background voices. However, the song quickly shifts tones through a slower beat, giving the song a more eerie and suspenseful feeling. The suspense the song gives off is from the changing in the connotation of the lyrics as well as a deep layered, but also electric, base tone that plays at the song’s climax. The climax in “Deja Vu” is when the second beat drops. In the music video, when the song reaches its chorus, Rodrigo is in a rundown, and beat up room that’s almost Batman-esc because of the dark and cave-like room. She is seen watching film of herself on a bunch of different televisions. The televisions each show different videos of Rodrigo singing whether it be on the beach, or out in a field. This quite obviously is a tie to the song’s title “Deja Vu,” since it shows Olivia in situations she has been in previously.

Rodrigo has the potential to be in the music industry for a long time because even though her new song “Deja Vu” didn’t hit record numbers on the chart like her song “Driver’s License,” it is a song that’s message of reflection will resonate with a variety of age demographics. Plus, the song’s repetitive lyrics allow a listener to sing along after only their first listen.
