Students who received a one in a class 1 solo or ensemble in the UIL Solo and Ensemble competition will be competing at state this week.

Just a few weeks into the school year and members of the jazz band had to find their groove as they took part in the All-Region Jazz Audition at Wylie East High School on September 24 with junior Jack Shore, senior Jessica Goodrich and senior Andie Hughes making the All-Region Jazz band in a process that is more involved than choir or concert band.

“There are three pieces to perform plus an improvisation étude, as compared to normal region where there are only three pieces,” senior Jessica Goodrich said.

Students involved spent their 7th period jazz rehearsal preparing for the audition.

“[I practiced] probably an hour a day for four weeks,” sophomore Ethan Etchieson said.

Beyond the amount of preparation time spent, the students had to perform for their director before they would be allowed to participate in the audition.

“[The directors had to] make sure we could play the music before we went and did it in front of judges,” Etchieson said.

The level of competition was also intense.

“Jazz region consists of 4A, 5A, and now 6A schools rather than just people from 5A,” Goodrich said. “So there’s a larger range of competition from more schools.”

The intense competition can lead to some feelings of uneasiness among students involved.

“[The audition] was really nerve racking,” junior Jack Shore said.

About the Contributors
Andie Hughes, Staff Reporter
Senior Andie Hughes feels as if she is always doing something… Mostly watching  movies and nerdy t.v. shows or eating food, but there is occasionally school and work with marching band thrown in to top off the mix. One of the drumline section leaders for the band, Andie can most often be seen yelling at a group of teenage boys making large amounts of noise. Andie can also therefore be found at all football games and pep rallies showing the very best of stunning school spirit. Andie works at Homegoods and prides herself on getting discounted hand towels. One of Andie’s proudest accomplishments is her 5 week excursion to Italy the summer before her freshman year, four years ago, because she’s a senior.

Ian Raybon figures that if Alicia Keys was a man, there would be a song apt enough to describe him because he is constantly on fire. Ian has tried to find a pig costume for Halloween, because his one true wish is to truly understand the bacon he takes so much time eating; turns out his hair works fine in that department as well. Ian’s life can generally be summed up by the song “In Da Club” by rapper 50 Cent, and he attributes his incredible intelligence to his mentor Mr. Higgins. He is not quite sure where he gets his incredible looks, but his parents get nervous every time he says the words “adopted” and “Michael Jackson’s son” in the same sentence. When Ian graduates, he expects a full ride scholarship to Cambridge where he will major in Thuganomics and minor in Womanizing.
