Choir and theatre students face UIL conflict

Choir+and+theatre+students+face+UIL+conflict

Every year, the choir and theatre programs show their work and talent in UIL competitions.   However this year, both competitions are scheduled on the same day, forcing 12 students that compete in both choir and theatre to do some schedule juggling.

“This is the first time it’s ever happened, and we didn’t know until about two weeks ago,” senior Cam Casey said. “We’ll be able to compete in both, but it’s going to be an interesting day.”

The news hit students when sophomore stage manager for One Act Play, Nicole Bartel looked up the schedule for their day at Area competition.

“The OAP website had scheduled our Area competition on that Thursday, instead of that Friday like it was originally,” Bartel said. “They changed the date due to the hosting school having a major conflict, and didn’t notify any of the schools because they didn’t imagine it being a big deal.”

For certain students, it is. The choir students will go to competition on Thursday, April 11 at Allen High School, then transfer quickly by bus to John Horn High School in Mesquite.

“It’ll definitely be a very rushed day,” senior Nate Thorley said.  “We’re all going to have to have two different mindsets, one for choir and one for OAP.  It’s something that we’ve never done before, but I know it’ll work out, given the talent we all have.”

The day may look hectic to some people, but for those pulling double duty, it’s a unique opportunity to showcase their talents.

“I think it will be an exciting day,” senior Alex Adkins said.  “We’ll get to compete in two different competitions and hopefully show everyone what we’re made of.  The good thing is, we’re all prepared for it.”
