This week might be just like every other week for the average student. That is, if you’re not in this year’s musical “Little Shop of Horrors”.
LSOH is the musical unlike any other musical this school has done before.
“It’s dark, and it’s twisted. It’s kind of refreshing that we’re actually doing something that we don’t have to completely censor,” junior Mitch Cross said.
The students and staff of the theatre and choir programs have worked late every night painting or building the set, making or transforming costumes, or working on the gigantic puppet used in Act 2 of the show.
“I’ve been up here every night until 10:30 p.m. at the least. Ms. Brewster and Mr. Davenport are here usually until 11:00 p.m.,” junior Farren Barnett said. “Without parents and students helping, the show wouldn’t meet its standards.”
Although the show is darker than other musicals the theatre and choir program have presented, it’s still appropriate for young audiences (unless they’re easily frightened by large plants). And after months of rehearsals, the cast and crew are ready for the show’s debut.
“This being my first musical at Lovejoy, I’m very pleased with the way it’s been flowing. The students have their roles down, and each rehearsal now consists of minor tweaks in their characters and running tech,” assistant director John Davenport said. “I’m very excited for people to see the outcome of all the hard work we’ve put into this production.”
Tickets for “Little Shop of Horrors” have been on sale for more a week now and cost $10 for students and $15 for adults. “Little Shop of Horrors” opens Thursday at 7:00 p.m. with additional shows both Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
