Being a knight

It’s a cold, cold night out on the football field. The wind is wiping your face as you watch the football team run plays and score touchdowns. “Poms! Now!” is yelled into your left ear by Major Corri Hughes of the Majestics. The pressure is all too much to handle for any average person. The job of carrying poms, batons, escorting girls and yelling for the team isn’t easy. It takes precision and perfection. The perfection of a Knight.

The Knights are required to go to every football game, unless they have a major conflict, and be an escort for the Majestics.

“We usually just escort them to the restroom, but at halftime, we take them to the field and get to push people out of the way as well. It’s pretty fun,” junior Bo Graham said.

The job of being a Knight requires good social skills, a kind and gentle heart, and above all, patience.

“Fetching water bottles for the Majestics is a big part of it,” junior Garrett  Northcutt said.  “We ask the girls if they’re thirsty and then throw water bottles at them.”

The Majestics are very thankful to have the Knights alongside them during the games to help them with whatever it is they need. On cold nights, the Knights will bring them warm drinks, make sure they all have a warm blanket, and do all the little things to help the Majestics have a perfect performance.

“They’re extraordinary! The guys are so helpful and kind-hearted. They keep us company too so that’s a plus!” junior Abby Hughey said. “We all love them.”

Although being a Knight is a job that takes place only once a week, becoming a Knight isn’t an easy task. You have to be Knighted.

“I pick and choose our Knights carefully. They have to be men of the graduate profile, nice, and responsible,”  dance coach Fela Lowrance said. “It’s important that we can trust that they’ll do their job, and do it well.”

The Knights go through the same routine every game which includes escorting the girls to their seats carrying any supplies they may need, sitting with the Majestics during the game, and circling up before the halftime show.

“Circling up is my favorite part of the job because it’s the part where you get to be a rowdy person. Essentially, you get to be yourself,” Northcutt said.

After the games, the Knights load the bus (if it’s an away game) and journey home with the Majestics and talk about what could be done next week to make their job more efficient.

“As Lead Knight, it’s my job to always keep the other Knights in line,”  senior Alex Adkins said.  “They’re always goofing off and getting into shanagins. It can get pretty irritating, but we love it.”
