Is “Anyone But You” the next “How to lose a guy in 10 days?”

Anyone but You is a 2023 American romantic comedy film directed by Will Gluck, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ilana Wolpert. Based on Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, it stars Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.

Some people say the new movie “Anyone but you” starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell is the next best rom com in this decade. Honestly, they aren’t wrong. This movie had the perfect mixture of funny, sweet, and on the edge of your seat moments. It was really refreshing to see two newer faces in this kind of movie because Sweeney and Powell are normally in deeper, drama films. Personally, I love the storyline of enemies to lovers and this movie showed that with a twist.

This movie started off with Bea (Sweeney) and Ben (Powell) meeting at a coffee shop and hitting it off. They had a really nice first date, but by the end it finished on bad terms. Towards the middle of the movie we found out one of Ben’s best friends was dating Bea’s sister. This led to a huge wedding in Australia and of course Ben and Bea were both in the wedding. After a lot of arguing and troubles, they have to find a way to make it work. Going into the movie I wasn’t expecting this storyline, but I think it was perfect for the actors they chose.

Something that annoyed me with this film was how sensitive all of the characters were. I understand the back and forth, but over and over again it just got to be too much. Parts of the storyline were kind of confusing, but most of it was a normal rom-com storyline and kept me intrigued. Another thing I loved about this movie was the obvious chemistry between the two main characters. Recently in films the relationship between the main characters isn’t as emotionally pulling as old films. In “Anyone But You” we got a taste of that chemistry movies used to have with a modern touch. One other great thing about this movie is the length. Starting in about 2010 movies started getting over 2 hours long, and it is way too much. Personally, a good 90 minute movie is enough for me. They kept this movie at a smooth 1 hour and 45 minutes with credits, and I thought it was perfect for people with short attention spans.

All in all. This movie was one of my favorites for 2023, and I thought it was a great way to end off the 2023 season.
