Freshman no. 17 Gentry Barker jumps for a spike. Barker has 101 kills so far this year.

Gentry Barker is a freshman on varsity volleyball. Barker also plays sand volleyball and won nationals over the summer.

The Red Ledger: How long have you been playing volleyball?
Gentry Barker: I’ve been playing volleyball ever since I was seven years old.
TRL: What is your favorite part of playing volleyball?
GB: My favorite part of volleyball is my hard work paying off, winning, and showing my improvement as a player.
TRL: What are your goals for this season?
GB: My goals in life for volleyball is to play as a pro beach volleyball player and play on a division one beach volleyball team in college.
TRL: What does a week in volleyball training look like?
GB: A week in training is very busy. Everyday after school I have highschool volleyball practice, and after I switched to playing beach volleyball outside of school, I have three practices a week. On the weekends I usually have a lot of tournaments.
TRL: What has been your biggest challenge this season, and how did you overcome it?
GB: My biggest challenge has definitely been overcoming my mental self, I can be really hard on myself. I also work to not let what people say affect me.
TRL: How do you balance volleyball with the rest of your life?
GB: I balance my life by making sure that I still am making time for my friends, family, and homework on the days that I have off.
TRL: What’s some of your best memories playing volleyball?
GB: My best memories are winning nationals and making my first club team ever.
TRL: How did it feel to win nationals?
GB: It was so fun winning nationals, and I started crying because all my life playing volleyball, it was like the final game, and I was so happy and proud about winning the game.

Ready for her first year on TRL staff, junior Zoe Reed is excited to start writing. Reed is often found on the soccer field scrimmaging with her club teammates, reading her new favorite book or waiting impatiently for the new Taylor Swift album. She loves to sing the new pieces in choir, especially Flight and Tshela Moya, and is counting down the days for region auditions. She is a big fan of her two dogs, Vader and Rex, and takes way too many pictures of them. She is excited for the TRL experience and can’t wait to see what the year brings.
