State Highway 5 in Fairview will close for six months to realign the road with construction set to begin in the next few weeks.
“The project will straighten sharp curves at an abandoned rail line just south of FM1378,” Texas Department of Transportation area manager, Barry Heard said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News. “The project will increase sight distance for motorists, improving safety for drivers and bike riders who frequent the route.”
All Fairview and Lucas regulars are familiar with the very precarious abandoned railroad turn near the entrance of the Sloan Creek neighborhood. It is well known as a safety issue in the community and its reconstruction will benefit all who drive Highway 5 regularly.
However, its closure will force drivers to reroute. The back way to travel to 75 will no longer be available. Instead, local Fairview and Lucas drivers will have to use the Stacy Road access to US Highway 75.
Highway 5 is expected to be open again in late November.
