College tips for underclassmen

Throughout the course of high school, most underclassmen are under the impression that they don’t need to start planning for college until their senior year; however being prepared early could make a drastic difference in your collegiate dreams. So, in order to help you succeed further in your future school plans, The Red Ledger has these tips.

First and foremost, it is never too early when it comes to preparing for college. Though high school grades are of high importance in the application process, it is also extremely imperative to achieve high scores on the SAT and/or ACT.   These tests can be taken as many times as needed, however, waiting until senior year can lead to a bit of a time crunch.

“Never take tests too late, you never know what could go wrong in the scoring process or if you show up unprepared, it can really stress you out,” senior Thomas Kotecki said.

Knowing the availability of the tests is also something that is extremely helpful. These placement tests can be taken at any high school as long as you register on time. Setting up an online account at collegeboard.com is a great way to hear news on upcoming tests nearby, months in advance.

Something else you might want to take into consideration AP courses throughout your high school career. While some may find the idea of AP classes undoubtedly challenging, it is something college admission counselors look for on applications. The classes are challenging, but they are meant to give you a glimpse of what actual college classes are like. With there being a large variety of AP classes, it becomes easier to find one you are good at. However, one class seems to be more helpful than others.

“I would suggest taking AP Statistics, and not just because I teach the class. Almost every degree plan requires Statistics. It is also fun and relevant no matter what field you choose to study,” teacher Darla Emerson said.

This class deals with real world situation and applies mathematics in a way so that you understand and utilize the material differently.

While the stress of high school classes and activities will definitely be more challenging than other things you will encounter, it is also important to take advantage of your high school years.

“Even though high school can be trying sometimes, there’s nothing like having great memories and lifetime friends from high school,” senior Lauren Sanders said.  “Enjoy every moment, but still work hard!”

Shalom, I'm Rebekah and I'm not Jewish. This is my first year on the Newspaper Staff but I'm extremely excited for it. I eat pickles every single day and I am basically in love with my dog, Buddy. Well, the closest I can get to "loving" him without it being creepy. My parents made me watch Star Wars at a young age, so you could say that I'm well-rounded. Harry Potter is my biggest hero and influence and one day I will invent an actual Nimbus 2000, so remember me because one day you will be jealous. (Also, ask Mr. Higgins to do his Ollivander impersonation because you'll laugh until you cry). I don't meditate so I'm not sure why I did that in my Staff picture. It's not even funny. Honey Boo Boo is currently my favorite TV show so I shall leave you with this: Stay golden, sugar bears.
