Sitting in uncomfortable plastic chairs for hours on end is not what most teenagers want to be doing, but the Texas Department of Public Safety has become notorious for long waits and bad service.
However, DPS is attempting to overcome this stigma by creating two new driving license offices in North Texas. The new “Mega Centers” are going to cut down the wait time to approximately thirty minutes per person.
There will be two new offices: one in Garland, and the other in East Fort Worth (Interstate 30 and Eastchase Parkway) to cater to the influx of Texas residents. Although the old DPS offices will not close down, the Mega Centers will be issuing new and renewed driver’s licenses, commercial licenses, I.D.’s, and parent- taught driving certificates for permits.
For most high school students, the idea of a thirty minute wait is mindboggling. After waiting in line for many hours, it is difficult to imagine a relatively pain free DPS experience.
“I went to the DPS is Waxahachie and I waited for five hours,” senior Grace Tolson said. “I went to take my test, only to find out that my registration sticker wasn’t the right one.”
