The sounds of spring

This past winter, while students have been hunkered down in classrooms, many musical artists have been hard at work putting together new albums to help give us an escape from the school work tedium. Here’s a few of the albums coming out this spring that should be worth a listen, or at least seem to be.

Lady Gaga – “ARTPOP”

Release Date: TBD

Lady Gaga’s new album was scheduled to come out early this spring, but the release date has been pushed back indefinitely due to Gaga’s hip injury, sustained during a performance and requiring surgery that forced her to cancel the rest of her world tour to recover. Regardless of the delay, Gaga’s two previous albums have been wildly popular and it is likely that she will release another record full of her uniquely entertaining brand of empowering dance pop.

The Band Perry – “Pioneer”

Released: April 2

After the wild success of the hit “If I Die Young” from their debut album, people have been waiting to see if The Band Perry would follow it with more great country music or if they would become another one-hit wonder. Pioneer is the follow up to that debut, and the band took a road trip from Nashville to California to get inspiration for the album, which early reviews say is likely to be a quality country record.

Fall Out Boy – “Save Rock and Roll”

Release Date: April 16

Fall Out Boy went on an indefinite hiatus in late 2009, leaving fans wondering if they would ever get back together. After various solo albums by the band’s members, the band announced in February that they were back together and releasing a new album in April. They have already released a single that has many people excited for the rest of the record.

Vampire Weekend – “Modern Vampires of the City”

Release Date: May 7

Vampire Weekend have a very original sound that appeals to most of the public at large (a hard feat to accomplish). Their two previous albums have had considerable success, leaving fans wanting more of Vampire Weekend’s eclectic style that can’t be found anywhere else. This follow-up to 2010’s “Contra” promises to include the same style that made the band so popular while including new lyrical sources to keep the album fresh and entertaining.

Daft Punk – “Random Access Memories”

Release Date: May 21

This highly anticipated album is Daft Punk’s first album in 8 years. After the 2005 release of “Human After All”, fans kept waiting for new material that never came. Daft Punk composed the score of Disney’s 2010 sci-fi film “Tron: Legacy”, but it was mostly orchestral arrangements and wasn’t the full-length electronic album fans were hoping for. Finally, the wait is over and Daft Punk is releasing a new album that promises to be a continuation of their iconic style, and early teaser clips have built excitement over the potential greatness that is to come.

About the Contributor
Meridan Cavanaugh, Staff Reporter
In the beginning, Meridan Cavanaugh could not talk, walk, read or write. Now, sixteen years after her parents made up her unpronounceable name, she has overcome these obstacles and risen above her initial uselessness. A part of choir, theater and sometimes newspaper, she is involved in only the coolest programs of the school. She enjoys singing and playing piano, bass guitar, ukulele and harmonica, and will play the intro to Billy Joel's “Piano Man” for you until your ears bleed. Also, she is always listening to music from an alarmingly wide range of genres and is a condescending music snob. A cinephile from a very young age, she has vowed to watch every film on the “1000 Films to Change Your Life” list before she dies, which is a tall order for a mere mortal, but she, having gained immortality in a battle of wits with Socrates, will have no issue completing it. Some of her other life goals are to join the South African Extreme Ironing team, go to a Rage Against the Machine or Beastie Boys concert, and high five James Franco. Meridan moved here from Connecticut in eighth grade and while she misses trees, hills of any kind, and seasons, she has grown to love the people and low sales tax here.
