Most freshmen come into high school athletics expecting they will have to wait their turn until they have a chance at varsity, but that is not the case for Sarah Langs.
Standing at a staggering 6’2”, she towers over her fellow freshmen, and over seniors for that matter. It is Langs’s first year in the district and she began her time here by earning a spot on the elite varsity volleyball team.
“It was a very cool experience that not a lot of people have a chance to have,” Langs said.
As a freshman who was a key component to leading the team to another year at the state championship game, Langs did an exceptional job with adapting to the team’s tough schedule and intense practice routines.
“She has such a positive attitude and was always doing and giving 110%,” junior Molly Lacey said. “Being a freshman, she shocked me with her leadership abilities by stepping up at critical points in a game and pulled out the game for us.”
Not only did Langs have to come into a prestigious program known for winning as only a freshman, she also had to find her place and earn her trust in the volleyball family.
“The team was very close and I think that dynamic helped with how well we worked together,” Langs said.
Langs’ teammates also seemed to think that she was a perfect addition to the team.
“Sarah has such fire, passion, and confidence, which is very rare for a freshman, and with those qualities she gained the upper-classmen’s trust on the court and helped lead the team to a state title,” junior Katelyn McKenzie said.
Being a freshman on the five time state championship volleyball team might boost one’s ego, but that is not the case for Langs. She took this opportunity as a humbling experience.
“It has taught me about hard work, dedication, and to trust in each other,” said Langs. “It all pays off in the end.”
For Langs it was straight from winning the state volleyball game to earning yet another varsity position on the basketball team. It is early in the season but she is excited to get to know her new coaches and become closer to the team.
“It is a lot different from volleyball, but I think that having a variety of coaches will help me in the long run,” Langs said. “I learn different things from each coach.”
Whether it’s volleyball or basketball, Langs has proved herself to be a hard worker and a good fit on any team.
“I love her to death and I couldn’t imagine this year without her,” Lacey said.
