Senior Belk “Figures It Out”

Senior Julia Belk’s talent on the unicycle has taken her numerous places; from the local to the international, in which she placed first. But Belk’s most recent accomplishment has taken her somewhere completely new: Los Angeles.

A couple of weeks ago, Belk received a call from a manager on Nickelodeon’s game show Figure It Out, a 30-minute show that was revived just recently in June. On it, kids with special skills or unique achievements compete as contestants on the show while a panel of 4 Nick celebrities try to guess the phrase that describes the contestant’s talent.

“They called me and said they were going to show my YouTube video of the world competition to the producer,” Belk said. “Later the producer called my parents and they agreed to have me on the show. We had to fill out a ton of paperwork and proof of enrollment stuff.”

On the 3rd weekend in September, Belk and her mom were sent on a pre-paid airplane trip to L.A for three days.

“They paid for the plane and hotel and everything,” Belk said. “They also gave my mom and me a certain amount of money to spend every day, and it ended up being about $300 dollars.”

Belk was not the only one being filmed for her unique talents.

“There were 3 other kids filming with me, with two kids per episode,” Belk said. “The other person in my episode was an traditional Irish dancer.”

The panel of judges was a special feature for contestants, although Belk wasn’t entirely sure who she was facing.

“I don’t really know who any of the judges were, even though they were supposed to be celebrities,” Belk said. “The only person I knew was [actor and musician] Max Schneider.”

Although the trip included shopping, filming and fun, school was never far from her mind.

“There’s some sort of law that says that you have to attend at least 3 hours of school, even when you’re filming,” Belk said. “So they hired a substitute teacher and had us all sit in a classroom in silence for 3 hours a day, which was pretty stupid.”

In addition to the judges guessing her talent, Belk gave a demonstration of her unicycle and had the opportunity to win various prizes, which will be revealed when the show airs.

“The show airs on October 26th at 6:00 on Nickelodeon,” Belk said.
