Band performs Friday night

The band program will be performing its annual pre-UIL concert tonight at 7:00 p.m. Featuring pieces that both the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will be performing at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading competition at Allen High School on April 16, this is one of the band’s last competition shows of the school year.

Starting the concert is the Symphonic Band, directed by band director Ali Duck. Duck says her band’s pieces will feature a variety of styles from traditional Susa marches to more contemporary sounds.

“We will be playing ‘The Liberty Bell March’ by John Phillips Susa, ‘The Willows of Winter’ by B.J. Brooks, and ‘Spoon River’ by Percy Grainger,” Duck said.

Following the Symphonic Band will be the Wind Symphony, which will be performing an arrangement of pieces not just for UIL, but as a part of an auditioning process to become the 4A Honor Band of the Texas Music Educators Association. They will be performing “Children’s March” by Percy Grainger, “Give us this Day” by David Maslanka and the Finale from Charles Ives’ “Symphony No. 2.”

Following the pre-UIL concert, the Jazz band, directed by Diana Williams, will be traveling to Collin College Saturday to perform in the Collin County Jazz Festival at 11:00 a.m. They will be performing “Straight No Chaser” by Thollonius Monk, “Dreams Remembered” by Rick Stizel and “VIP’s Boogie” by Duke Ellington.

As clever as he is strong, as charming as he is quick, and as smart as he is intelligent, Adam Schasel was born in a hospital somewhere but immediately regretted being so mainstream. Accordingly, he spent the next 14 years of his life being raised by courage wolves and honey badgers until it was time to enroll in Lovejoy High School, at which he is currently a senior. This is Adam’s second year writing for The Red Ledger, and he still hopes to attain that coveted columnist position so he can shove his radical views down your throat. His passion for the political process is paralleled only by his love of Brian K Vaughan’s Saga and Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra (He ships Borra, in case you were wondering) and his penchant for playing both Pokémon cards and poker. When he is not engaged in these activities Adam likes to catch up on current events, particularly from sources such as The Economist, Ezra Klein’s Wonkblog, NPR and Bob Loblaw’s Law Blog. Please don’t ever talk to him about prom dresses.

Michael Berman’s interest in photography began at the age of eight, shortly after his family moved to Fairview, Texas from his birthplace of Reading, England. He quickly progressed from a point-and-shoot camera to his first Nikon DSLR at the age of 10. Michael attended Sloan Creek Middle School where he contributed to the award winning Rosette yearbook. In 2010 Michael won 4^th place overall in the Middle School category of the Jostens’ National Yearbook Photo Contest. More recently, Michael placed 3^rd in Sports Action photography in the National Scholastic Press Association’s Best of Show competition at the 2012 Fall Convention. Since joining the Lovejoy High School Red Ledger as a Freshman, Michael has shot a wide variety of subjects but is best known for his captivating sports photography. When he’s not shooting, Michael enjoys discovering and listening to new music. His musical taste runs the gamut of styles, from Jazz and Classic Rock to Alternative and Hip Hop. He also enjoys running, soccer, skiing and spending time outdoors with his dog Zoe. In January 2013, Michael will travel to Costa Rica with Friends of Nosara, a non-profit organization that provides support and resources to the region’s public schools and the Escuelita de Nosara, a day camp for 200 local children.
