Fashion double standards revealed

Fashion+double+standards+revealed

In an era filled with short skirts, small tank tops, and skintight pants, today’s fashion statements shows a little bit more skin and physique than ever before. Girls clearly embrace this wave of fashion and for the most part there are no objections (except for fathers). For guys though, what they wear seems to be judged and puts them in a category that might not be true (a tool). Is there a double standard on what girls and guys wear?

To put this to a test I personally did an experiment where I would wear some of the revealing clothing that girls usually wear to school everyday.  On the first day I put on a pair of tight yoga paints that showed every curve of my lower body. Strolling down the halls I could tell people were staring at me. Meanwhile many girls were wearing the same exact thing, but not a single thing was brought up to them. Guys got a good laugh at what I was wearing and girls were teasing me about my big butt, but overall I don’t think anyone took me too seriously.

The next day I really put myself in the fire by wearing a tank top and showing a little skin.  I could tell people were judging me, with a couple of guys giving me dirty looks. I guess this comes from the tension guys have with each other. At least a couple of girls thought I was looking cute in my top. (Nothing is better than an ego boost for a guy).

After my experiment was done, and reflecting on what the reaction was from the public, I have concluded that guys have a totally different standard on what they wear compared to girls. When girls wear short dresses and spaghetti strap tops, guys love it. On the other hand, guys seem to judge each other on what they wear, finding any flaw that would connect what you wear to your personality. While all of this is coming only from two days of embracing a change of clothing, I do feel that maybe there is too much reflection on what guys wear. The clothes on a person might be your first impression of someone but remember, there is a person under it too.
