They form, they break up, and sometimes they eventually become famous. They are school bands.
Some bands begin to form when kids are going into or are in middle school and high school. The band the Beatles met and joined as a band at Quarry Bank High School in Liverpool, England. Even Radiohead met in Abingdon School a boys’-only school, in Oxfordshire, England.
Some bands have their weekly rehearsals and that’s all they get to do. Other bands get additional rehearsals in and occasionally get a gig here and there. Fewer get rehearsal times, gigs, and are able to record some of their songs. A very small fraction of bands get to all of these steps and as they get older, their band becomes their full time job as adults.
“I play with Kacie Lynch, do some coffee shops, and also I’m trying to play bass in the Young Life band,” sophomore Kaden Vannorsdel said.
There are a few bands known campus wide. One of these is The Modern Convicts. Its members are Josh Fisher, Rhys Woodruff and Cameron Schafer. Another band is Crucify the Flesh with Travis Berger and Andrew Adams.
“I’m putting a Lovejoy album together by getting people that love music and making a CD that shows everyone’s talents,” Vanorsdel said.
Hidden talents are everywhere. The next Beatles could be walking down the halls of the high school. But for now, students will just have to keep an eye out to see what may happen in the future.
