The Scholastic Art and Writing awards date back to 1923 and have grown into the largest and most prestigious recognition project for creative teens in the U.S. Some memorable past winners include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Stephen King, Robert Redford, Sylvia Plath, and many more. Recently 21 students won awards at the regional level and three more placed on a national level.

“Each of these photographers has served on the yearbook staff as photographers, have competed on many different levels of competition and are also in the AP 2D art photo class,” yearbook adviser Mary Woodruff said. “These photos came out of their portfolios, what they are working on to turn into the College Board. They worked very hard on these.”

For those that received recognition, the long hours of hard work were worth it.

“It’s a reward for all the hard work I have put in,” senior honoree Brad Jacobs said.“(It took) a lot of hours. It took me a couple days.”

The portfolios and other works of art done by award winners are public for everyone, including colleges, to see. Some of the winners have already seen the positive outcome of such information being available to the public.

“I had five colleges email me already and three call me because they all already know about it,” senior honoree Kate Smith said. “It’s cool because it’s nationally recognized.”

Below is a sample of photography pieces that photo students have been working on. The student pieces featured did not win any awards but are shown here to recognize their merit.
