Realignment: familiar faces and returning rivals

Jessica Parrott, Sports Editor

After the big announcement of a 6A classification, UIL announced new district alignments for football and basketball.

The Leopards will now be a member of District 10-5A which consists of:

  • Denison
  • Lucas Lovejoy
  • McKinney
  • McKinney North
  • Prosper
  • Sherman
  • Wylie
  • Wylie East

The only differences are the loss of Greenville and Royse City and the addition of McKinney High and Prosper. While there aren’t many changes, they will have an impact.

While some sports such as wrestling and soccer, may be assigned to different districts, most sports on campus will follow the football and basketball realignment.

Below are the reactions of head coaches here on campus.

Amanda Douglas – Softball

“My initial reaction was that I’m really not surprised and I’m actually happy that it’s still very close and we aren’t going to the east and to the north. The only thing that may take us south and east is Wylie and Wylie East so for the most part I’m pretty happy that we’re not having to travel too far.”

“The only new teams are Prosper and McKinney and McKinney always has a good strong team for softball but at the same time we will be competitive against them. I don’t really know much about Prosper except for what they used to have. I think really just Mckinney North, Sherman and Wylie are going to be our top ones.”

Kyle Herrema – Basketball

“I think the addition of Prosper and McKinney is going to make the district stronger as a whole. Also, it’s going to be better travel-wise. It’s a lot easier to travel to Prosper than wasting time driving to Greenville. I think this will be better not just for basketball, but for all sports.”

Russell Reichenbach – Baseball

“I’m excited about it now. It’s going to be a tough district, a lot of competition right there, but that’s stuff we look forward to, playing tough ball. This will be a tough district to be in, it’s never going to be easy but if you play a tough district hopefully that can prepare you for a tough playoff run.”

Ryan Mitchell – Volleyball

“For volleyball, it makes our district a lot tougher. We take out the last two finishers in the last two years are the ones that we lost and we are adding McKinney who has a really good team and Prosper has got a really good team. They were in the state finals. For volleyball, it makes our district a lot tougher, but for me, that’s exciting because it allows us to have to play tougher competition in district, which has been a problem in the past.”

Mike Eaton – Wrestling

“This list doesn’t apply to wrestling, we get our district realignment in March. “But we don’t care who is on the list, we’re going to win. I don’t care about the list, because our wrestlers are going to dominate.”

Jeff Kear – Girls Soccer

“It’s a hard district. Doable but difficult.”

Ryan Priem – Football (offensive coordinator)

“This was expected. There are still many familiar foes that we’ll face. We lost Royse City and Greenville, however Prosper and McKinney High were added into the mix. No matter the outcome we were going to prepare for who ever we might face.”
