Softball takes a swing at breast cancer

The rain was coming down hard on Saturday morning, but inside the indoor athletic facility 11 teams were dry and battling for the right to be called champions. The fifth annual wiffle ball tournament was hosted by the softball team, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation.

The softball team hosts this tournament each year after their annual lock in, where they sleep in the indoor facility after setting up for the tournament.

This year, the wiffle ball tournament expanded from seven teams to 11, creating a need for two brackets: a Gold and a Silver.

After six 25 minute games, the champions of the Gold bracket were the Honey Nut Ichiros, a team of seniors Tanner DeVinny, Taylor Neitsch, Mason Chase, Tom Campbell, Austin Turnbow, Sammi Curry, and Ginger Hervey. Every member on this winning team is a member of the varsity softball or baseball team, and they took home the gold in a 1-0 championship.

In the Silver bracket, a team entitled the I.R. (Injured Reserve) List took home the championship. This team consisted of students Tucker DeVinny, Justin Wicker, and CJ Vogel, and adults Dan Wicker, Rodney Frye, Annie Frye, Scott Davis, and Jana Carmichael.

The tournament raised more than $500 for breast cancer research.

About the Contributor
Ginger Hervey, Editor-in-chief
Ginger Hervey cried on her eleventh birthday when she didn't get a Hogwarts letter. If there was an Olympic event for sitting around in sweatpants, eating ice cream, and watching old romance movies, she would make her country proud. She is an expert at procrastination and overloads her schedule past what any rational person would- as a result, she frequently tests how little sleep a teenager can get and still function on a basic level. To her, there is no such thing as "too old to trick-or-treat" on Halloween. To instantly be liked by Ginger, bring her chocolate chip cookies and/or mention the TV show How I Met Your Mother. She is a senior who, in spite of having ambitious plans of going to law school, can be found on weekends experimentally baking with her friends and watching Disney movies until she falls asleep on the couch. Entering her sixth and final year of high school newspaper, Ginger is thrilled to have such a dedicated and fun staff to work with, especially her co-editor, the sensational Liz Schasel. She hopes to leave a legacy of prestigious journalism and witty poll questions behind her.
