Country music: the under-appreciated art form

Fiddles, tractors, pick-up trucks, all common cliches and staples of country music. These traits permeate the music to be sure, but they’re not the only part of the wonderful music genre that has remained pigeonholed by the general public. Grab your cowboy hat and go on this amazing journey with me through Country Music.

Perhaps the best part about Country Music is the upbeat tone. Not every song is cheerful, but when they are they have the energy and perkiness that even Usher and Skrillex can only dream of. Anthems dedicated to red solo cups become phenomenons and lyrics praising one’s truck can single-handedly make a career go stratospheric. It’s refreshing, in a day and age where songs seem more intent to be depressing and rely on dubstep instead of actual singing talent, to find people who are more than happy to sing about things they genuinely enjoy.

As noted in many accounts, Country Music is the perfect concert music. With no autotuning, dubstep or intense remixing, these guys don’t rely on technology in their songs, meaning they actually sing on their albums and they actually sing in their concerts. This makes for a refreshing change when one hears these artists in person and they actually sound wonderful, whereas hearing someone like LMFAO can be a disappointment due to their live performances lacking their technology enhancements.

Besides their fun tunes and their quality concerts, the best part is when country music becomes emotional. The man who’s the best about this is Brad Paisley. Sure he can do a toe-tapping fun tune, but it’s his emotional songs that truly show his talent. “Waiting On A Woman and Then” exemplify his love for his wife, while his best song is one he does as a duet with Dolly Parton. The song, “When I Get Where I’m Going”, details how much joy there will be when the singer gets to heaven, how he’ll be able to see his grandpa again, do impossible feats and see God’s face. If you’re able to listen to the song without a tear being shed, well, you’re a stronger man than I.

While ?uestlove and Nicki Minaj do their umpteenth song about the club, Country Music expresses songs about true joy and powerful emotion. Maybe the majority of people think it’s about fiddles and trucks, but there’s more to Country Music than meets the eye.
