Twitter stalking pays off

Everyone on Twitter has those “followers.” You know, “that kid.” The one who favorites your every tweet and has an annoying habit of replying to tweets that don’t require a response. Meet senior Alex Adkins; he is that kid.

The self-proclaimed fan club president of the a cappella group Pentatonix spends his days Twitter stalking the members of group. In this case, his persistence paid off and Adkins got the opportunity to meet and hang out with the group.

Pentatonix is a five person a cappella group from Arlington who won the third season of the TV show “The Sing Off” in 2011. The group features Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kevin Olusola and Kirstie Maldonado. Pentatonix is currently on tour and their Christmas album “PTXmas” will be released on November 13th.

Adkins is a performer in varsity choir and the school’s a cappella group, so it is not surprising that he is a “follower” of Pentatonix. In fact, he is quick to say that he made his presence known to them, over and over again.

“I basically Twitter harassed them, and forced myself into their lives,” senior Alex Adkins said.

Adkins first met the group briefly when they performed in Dallas at the House of Blues on September 6. Little did he know, this was only the beginning. On October 18, Pentatonix returned to the area and performed at the McKinney Performing Arts Center. Alex was lucky enough to attend the concert for a second time, this time with a much better seat.

“I messaged Scott Hoying, one of the members, on Facebook and asked to be on his private guest list,” Adkins said.  “We had a few mutual friends that I mentioned, and it got me in.”

To Adkins, an avid a cappella music lover, this was the opportunity of a lifetime.

“I hung out with them in their green room, and watched the concert from backstage,” Adkins said.

The fun didn’t end there though.

“Afterwards, we all went to Whataburger, and hung out at their hotel, and talked about music,” Adkins said.

His experience is envied by many.

“I love Pentatonix, I wish I had gotten the chance to meet them,” sophomore Nicole Bartel said.

Everyone imagines meeting their favorite musicians, but for most, it never happens. For Adkins, it was an experience he will never forget.

“It was pretty much the greatest thing ever, that’s all I can say,” Adkins said.
