Imagine Dragons – redefining popular music

Imagine Dragons: the band that defines pop music. Take notes, Maroon 5. Imagine Dragons was formed in Las Vegas in 2008. From there, the four members of this pop indie-rock band recorded four EPs, a remix, and recently, their first album titled Night Visions which was released September 4th. It’s about time. This album carried itself to the top of the iTunes charts, landing as  the top album in America, and Canada. Which can mean only one thing: It has to be pretty good.

The album opens with the song everyone heard from this year’s Olympics, “Radioactive”. It’s a song that contains a very heavy electronic beat, bass and powerful lyrics. The song is good. It really is, but when people say it’s the best Imagine Dragons song, laughter ensues. The song is followed by “Tiptoe”, a very upbeat song supplied with a very catchy chorus. Two songs into the album and it’s already  gripping. But there’s still more ahead.

Originality is a word best used to describe this mighty fine piece of work. The lyrics are sung by the angelical voice of Dan Reynolds, keeping you engaged the entire time you listen to this album. Some of the songs are very relatable. Songs like “Demons”, “Amsterdam”, “Bleeding Out” and “Hear Me” showcase the soft but powerful feel that Imagine Dragons brings with a meaning that fits in everyone’s lives. “Hear Me” has its catchy riffs, solid vocals, and strange enough sounds like “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers, which only brings back awesome memories.

There’s a lot to listen to in this album. No song sounds the same as the previous or next one. It all adds up to make a very diverse album, and a very different type of music. Each musician in the band does more than one might think. Each musician plays more than one instrument, and displays it throughout Night Visions.

It’s hard to find flaws in this album. One that is very noticeable is Track 8. “Every Night” just doesn’t do it like the other songs do. It’s not as interesting, not as compelling, and frankly, a bit boring and cheesy.

What it all comes down to is the new sound Imagine Dragons has created. It’s still pop music, but it’s been twisted and molded to fit the liking of the band members, and notably, the fans. It’s nearly impossible to stop listening to Night Visions. Go buy this album. Listen to it and see Imagine Dragons in concert at the House of Blues in Dallas Texas on October 20th. Just prepare for amazement. It’ll be money well spent.

Music for quasi hipsters that think they’re cool for listening to something thats not top 40 when really they know nothing about music. Mumford and Sons, The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men.. the list goes on and on. Get some better taste.
