Darby Blaylock, Staff Reporter

The track and field season is underway and it began with a trip to Arkansas for a meet. The long season is just beginning and The Red Ledger’s Darby Blaylock caught up with one track and field athlete Mac Phillips to get his take on the season.

The Red Ledger: How did the Arkansas track meet go?

Phillips: “It went great. We ran pretty well. But the track was very very weird to run on because the curves were like waves, you had to run sideways on them kinda and a lot of people got hurt. But even though that was going on we still did very well.”

The Red Ledger: How was the trip overall?

Phillips: “The trip was really fun. We had a lot of good times and our team bonded very well.”

The Red Ledger: What races will you be running in this year?

Phillips: “I’m gonna run hopefully the 100, the 200, and the 400, along with all the relays for those races.”

The Red Ledger: How do you think you will do this year?

Phillips: “Hopefully I will do a little better than last year. I did alright last year but I can always do better.”

The Red Ledger: How do you think the team will do this year?

Phillips: “Fantastic.”

The Red Ledger: How is the team preparing for this track season?

Phillips: “Running in circles a lot. We go through extraneous workouts Monday through Friday after school, very consistently everyday. We are making sure each and everyone on the track team is there on time and is ready to work out.”

The Red Ledger: Does the cold weather play a factor in your training?

Phillips: “Yes it does, it actually plays a huge factor in it because it’s a lot harder to train outside in the cold weather. It’s harder to breathe when we are running and it makes it very difficult. But I feel like we can get through it.”
