My charm bracelet is more than just jewelry; it’s a time capsule of my life, each charm a reminder of the experiences that have inspired me, challenged me and led me to pursue my dreams. A few charms have become tarnished, others scratched, while some remain shiny and new. It has become a delicate link to my past, and with every jingle, I am transported to the best moments of my life. It is also a testament to where I’m going, expressed with each addition. Let me take you on a little journey.
Cross: This charm commemorates one of my proudest moments: the day I was baptized. I’ll never forget running into my first grade class to tell everyone the great news. My love for Jesus has continued to grow, and it inspired me to become a teacher in the kid’s ministry at my church. For the past four years, I have had the privilege to guide the same group of children in their pursuit of God. Seeing the world through the unburdened eyes of a child reminds me that the world is purposefully designed in love. I will miss the kids I’ve taught so much, but I am reminded God has a beautiful plan for us all.
Running Shoe: If someone had told my younger self that I’d one day choose running as my sport, well, I’d have probably cried. But running has turned out to be the most impactful experience of my life. I joined the cross country team in middle school out of curiosity, and a short 3,877 or so miles later, I am now a state champion, but it hasn’t been easy. Through injury and sickness, I began to question my ability to perform. But I stayed the course, rehabbing and training, becoming both physically and mentally stronger, and it was even more special when a gold medal was placed around my neck junior year. Although my road to victory has been littered with potholes, detours and even a few crashes, they all got me to where I am today, and I’m thankful for the journey.
Heart: In the center of my charms rests a heart, symbolizing the people that have been beside me throughout my journey. Shelby has taught me what it means to grow up with someone and love them through all the changes; thank you for being my best friend. Chris embodies selflessness and joy. I don’t know how I went 18 years without you. My Mia. You inspire me and push me to give my full dedication to everything. I am so grateful for your friendship. My amazing seven best friends (Rizzler Sheep): to find a friend group like ours that can love each other so deeply and be devoted to Christ is simply amazing. I will miss all our fun. To the teachers that have pushed me and supported me, thank you for allowing me to become a better version of myself. And to my parents and Ian, thank you for supporting me and loving me better than I could ever hope. Although I won’t see these people everyday, I know distance only makes the heart grow stronger.
As I look at the bracelet on my wrist, I see a storybook interwoven with interests, experiences and lessons, all stepping stones toward the person I hope to become. I am eager to add to my bracelet until every link is filled. And although I can’t say for certain what my next charms will be, I’m excited to be adding a Texas A&M charm, marking the closing of one chapter, and the opening of another. One last link, but countless more memories to come.
