The Cure released their 14th studio album “Songs of a Lost World” on November 1, 2024. As a girl in this generation who listens to more alternative rock, The Cure is my favorite band of all time. Their first album in 16 years has me in awe. The songs on the album, as most great Cure songs, move slowly and go on for minutes before lead singer, Robert Smith, opens his mouth.
The opening song “Alone” has a majestic sound and is very mournful. It’s about dying alone and the shattered pieces of a regret filled life. Yes, this sounds depressing, listening to the it or any other Cure song will make you think differently. Their sound is angelic and makes me wish I grew up during the time when they were in their prime. Smith’s voice to this day still sounds outstanding considering how many rockstars from the 80’s have butchard their voices.
If you’ve never listened or heard of The Cure, it has a different kind of feel and mood to it. On this album specifically you wouldn’t hear pop like songs and let’s face it, it’s definitely not an up beat type of album. Throughout this project “Drone:Nodrone” is the catchiest, and more fun song of the bunch besides the dark corus. Smith’s lyrics are not a complete downward spiral, but they are touching to the heart.
As I dug deeper into the album, the sound seemed so fresh and touching. They are a rare rock band that has made very personal songs on this album and many more. Another standout song would have to be “Endsong”, as it is an epic 10 minute song that gives listeners, especially the “OG” fans, that nostalgic feeling. If you decide to give this album a chance, definitely give “Endsong” a listen. You’re welcome. The band shows us a darker side, while still sounding fresh. I can see die hard Cure fans connecting with this material. It’s a much needed album and hopefully can reach new listeners especially in this generation.
All in all, “Songs of a Lost World” is a great return album considering their 16 year gap. I really admire that they kept a similar sound to how they did when they first started out in the late 70’s early 80’s. They kept the gothic alternative rock on the album. Smith has said that he wants to retire in the next few years and that’s understandable considering his age, but he without a doubt does not need to retire his creative gift. It’s refreshing to see a band making some of their best music years after starting out. Overall, I give this album a 9/10.
