Sabrina Carpenter released her new album, “Short N’ Sweet,” on Aug. 23, 2024. Carpenter had already solidified herself as a pop star phenomenon with record smashing singles such as “Feather” and “Nonsense,” and with the new album, it has catapulted her to the top. As a pop girlie, I absolutely adore Carpenter and her work, and I could not wait to hear her new songs.
Carpenter’s singles for the album were released earlier in the year, and I knew the album would be outstanding, because these two songs quickly became some of my favorite anthems. “Espresso,” the lead single, was dropped April 11, 2024, and on the first listen, I was already dancing along to the incredibly catchy tune. “Please Please Please” is similarly upbeat, and she is very clever with her words. Both songs are bound to stay stuck in your head for hours, and the production and lyrics truly showcase who Carpenter is and include many humorous aspects. Carpenter is known for her unserious lyrics, and this is a main reason why I adore her and her music, because she is not afraid to leave it all on the page.
The album as a whole is pop perfection. Upbeat songs such as “Good Grace,” “Taste” and “Bed Chem” give a similar vibe to pop princess Ariana Grande. Carpenter keeps it fresh with new concepts and modern production, and each song is extremely catchy with relatable notions such as having a massive crush, being upset about your ex with a new girl and being painfully stuck on someone.
The album offers different types of songs for each listener. My personal favorite off the album, “Don’t Smile,” uses the popular phrase ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’ Sabrina twists this line to express that she is in turmoil over an ended relationship. This song has an ethereal sound to it, with not only the production, but Carpenter’s incredible voice. The lyrics perfectly convery how it feels to be sad over someone and want them to miss you and think of you, the same way you are missing them. This song, although not a lead single, is the gem of the album, as Carpenter explores a new sound that is almost R & B and beautifully executed.
Overall, this album has absolutely no skips and every song in my opinion shows the genius that is Sabrina Carpenter. Without a doubt, this album will be nominated for several awards, and I’m sure it will come home with hardware. I rate “Short ‘N Sweet” a 9.5/10; it is a rollercoaster of emotions, and every song is relatable. This album only includes 12 songs, so I am praying for a deluxe album with more bangers.
