The 2023 musical, “Wonka” entails the story of a young, aspiring chocolatier trying to make a difference in the world through his tasteful creations. Directed by Paul King and starring Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka, the film encapsulates the optimism of a young entrepreneur striving to achieve their goals. The fantasy film is based on the 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, and it tells the origin story of the famous factory and its owner.
William Wonka embarks on a new journey when he sails to the city to impress a large crowd with his unique chocolates. When Wonka arrives, he does not have much money and is in need of a place to stay for the night. He ends up at the Scrubbits, who make him sign a contract upon his arrival. Due to his inefficiency to read, Wonka finds himself in a deal that he cannot escape. He is required to wash laundry for the Scrubbits until he can pay off his debts to them, which would take an unreasonable amount of time and ultimately damper his career as a chocolatier. Wonka must use his resources and optimism to find a creative solution to escape the control of the Scrubbits, so he can sell his chocolates to the world.
Some may disagree, but I found the movie enjoyable and inspiring. At times the music could have been better due to the length and inconsistency of the lyrics, however the plot and development of the characters throughout the movie made it enticing and fun to watch.
Wonka has been receiving somewhat positive feedback, with most critics appreciating the heartwarming and creative elements presented throughout the movie. I agree with the majority of the reviews, for I found the bizarre characters and aspects of the movie entertaining, but not necessarily a life-changing or revolutionary experience.
Wonka shows how enjoyable the journey to achieve one’s goals can be and how perseverance through hard times will bear rewards in the end. Wonka wasn’t anything exceptional, but it was simply good. I recommend this movie for any casual viewing with family and friends, and I would rate it a 7/10.
