This past weekend, the track team attended the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at The University of Texas at Austin. The team competed against 460 teams and had six athletes place in the top ten of their events.
“The Texas Relays meet went well,” head girls coach Carly Littlefield said. “We learned a lot of important lessons, gained some big time experience running in front of a packed stadium, and we had some really great racing.”
A certain group of athletes were selected to compete at Texas Relays. The team sent about 20 athletes to compete in distance, sprint, relays, and field events.
“Our distance team performed very well this weekend especially against such good competition,” junior Sara Morefield said. “Overall, this meet was a great experience in preparation for our upcoming district meet.”
In the 2000 meter steeplechase Morefield placed third and junior Peyton Benson right behind in fourth running a 7:11.04 and 7:18.75 respectively. The distance medley relay which consisted of a 1200-meter leg, 400-meter leg, 800-meter leg, and a 1600-meter leg was run by Morefield, sophomore Mia Reaugh, junior Kailey Littlefield, and freshman Camryn Benson respectively. The distance medley relay placed first at the meet and broke the school record with a time of 11:52.98.
“Our distance medley relay won the whole meet which was a huge deal because of the high level of competition we face,” Kailey said. “We’ve been consistently training all year and we are starting to hit some harder workouts, so seeing our hard work pay off this weekend gives us more motivation as track season begins to amp up.”
In the field, senior West Wilson competed in discus and placed 27th throwing 145-7 feet. Junior Colston Adamason competed in both long and triple jump. Adamson placed fourth in long jump with a distance of 23-6 feet and 11th in triple jumping 46-2 feet.
“In the past two meets almost every athlete has improved in their event, our field athletes have been performing exceptionally well,” Carly said. “Everyone is peaking at the right time, just before Districts.”
On the boys side, junior Nick Yarad placed fourth in the 2000 meter steeplechase running a 6:25.71. The boys distance medley relay placed seventh and ran a 10:21.83.
“As a team, we have all met our goals for this season,” Morefield said. “Whether those goals are individual or team, we have all pushed ourselves to achieve them.”
The team will be competing in the District meet in two weeks at home. The athletes will be competing to place in the top four in their event to advance to Area.
“Our goal is to win the District Championship on both the JV and Varsity teams,” Carly said. “We hope to advance all three relays out to Area along with as many individuals as we can. Our goal is to get at least two relays to the State Championship along with our key individuals which will give us a shot to win a Team State Championship.”
