Gone fishing

The Leopards have already begun their season with two tournament wins. On Saturday Oct. 10, the team brought home the Ray Roberts Team Champion Title. Juniors Connor Dunn and Ian Nash both placed first in the tournament.

“It feels great,” junior Ben Burns said. “We have done really well this year so far as a school already having two victories. A lot of our team has been putting in the hours, practicing and getting ready for the tournaments, and it’s really paid off so far. Hopefully, we can continue this streak throughout the season.”

The Leopards will have three more tournaments, followed by regionals, then state all the way till May remaining for the year.

“We have a lot of guys who are just really passionate about this,” junior Will Branum said. “Our team has always just been really invested in the sport, and that investment is only getting stronger with more younger anglers coming in every year that love it just as much as those who come before them. I believe we have another team of the year title coming this spring.”

The Leopards have proved over the years that they’re a winning program year in and year out with solid tournament outcomes.

“I like fishing because of how much it changes and how many variables go into having a good day,” Burns said. “Like how you could be catching them really well in practice and think you’re going to do well in the tournament and end up not catching a fish at all, all because of one little thing changing like the weather.”
