The school’s new facilities for numerous athletic programs have continued on with production and construction, and students and teachers can finally use some of the new locker rooms. Construction began in June 2017 and is expected to conclude in August 2019.

The 12-year-old locker rooms for most of the school’s athletic programs proved unsustainable for the growing population of student-athletes. Presently, the athletics programs are cycling through these rooms as construction continues and more and more rooms are finished, which leaves some students in the old locker rooms while others get to use the new ones.

“As the campus student body continues to grow as projected, the available lockers and locker room space will no longer be adequate to support the various programs using them,” assistant superintendent for operations Dennis Womack said.

In addition to the locker rooms, the training room in the field house and the gym will be expanded and upgraded.

“We were really fortunate to have really good weather,” assistant athletic director Kyle Herrema said. “We were able to get construction done way sooner. We’re way ahead of schedule.”

The new locker rooms are only a small part of the long-term plan that was set in motion in May 2014 when the district approved the bond authorization. Other parts of this deal were the dance studio, computer lab, and new facilities for theatre and art.

“I think the one thing the school district did a really great job on is they sought the input from the coaches,” Herrema said. “They’re the ones who are in there every single day. I think we’re going to have something the program is really proud of. It’s a great facility, and our athletes are going to really like it there.”

While production for the new locker rooms is wrapping up, construction is beginning on the multipurpose building, expected to be completed by August 2018, and the renovation of the field house in August 2019.
