The tennis team is currently in the midst of tournament play this spring as they prepare for the upcoming district meet on April 4-5. Junior Daniela Benigno said the tournaments offer a good opportunity to maximize their district potential.

“We’ve been using the tournaments to kind of see what everyone’s best at whether it’s singles or doubles or what not,” Benigno said. “By competing in these tournaments it will help us when we’re playing district opponents.”

Including this weekend’s tournament in Abilene, the Leopards have three tournaments on schedule before districts. A recent trip to Corsicana was a success, junior Jack Bennett said.

“We played pretty well and would’ve got first or second if they had tallied up the scores,” Bennett said. “Sometimes they don’t tally up the team’s total score since it’s individual season, they do team trophies at most tournaments, but they didn’t at Corsicana.”

Hoping to make an impact on the district, the team has been working hard to ensure their success.

“A lot of us take lessons outside of school for more practice,” Benigno said. “We do a lot of drilling all together as a team, we also do a lot of matchups every practice. Coach Cherry often puts us up against competition that will help us later on.”
