Review: Top five video games of 2016

Cameron Stapleton, A&E Editor

Although there was a lot of garbage released in the games industry last year, there were a handful of games that made 2016 bearable. Here are my top five favorite games from last year, from “worst” to “best.” However, you can’t go wrong with buying any of them.

  1. Battlefield 1 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

“Battlefield 1” had a huge amount of hype behind it, and for a lot of people, it lived up to it.For the past couple years, First Person Shooters have been exclusively set in the future, but “Battlefield 1” takes players to the muddy trenches of World War I to give players something fresh and exciting to explore. “Battlefield 1” is fun, engaging, and fast-paced, with interesting customization and a single-player campaign that takes players through the various fronts of WWI. Although “Battlefield 1” doesn’t highlight trench warfare like “Verdun” does, it is fun enough to shine past its historical inaccuracies.

  1. Stardew Valley (PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac)

“Stardew Valley” is the perfect game to play after a long day. Relaxing and easy to play, the 8 bit graphics and low-key soundtrack perfectly complement this feeling. Players take the role of a disgruntled computer programmer who takes control of their grandfathers farm after his death. Players can farm, mine, or raise animals while also having a dog or cat companion. Players can also foster relationships with the members of the nearby town, and will have to do so to upgrade their farm and tools. “Stardew Valley” is also easily moddable on PC, and presents endless enjoyment.

  1. Civilization 6 (PC)

From “Civilization 5” to “Civilization 6,” there were huge changes that gave the series a facelift. The graphics are now colorful and cartoonish, and fit the game a lot better than I initially expected. “Civilization 6” has also upped the challenge, giving a brand new experience to those who mastered the mechanics of the predecessor. However, the game has retained its “just one more turn,” philosophy of its addicting nature, and is more enjoyable now than ever before.

  1. Dark Souls 3 (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

“Dark Souls 3” is one of the most difficult games I have played, but brings to the table a rewarding and joyous experience. “Dark Souls 3”  is one of the few games I can hate with all my being, but also sing its praises. No other game has made me almost-break-a-controller-level furious, but then again, no other game has made me feel like throwing a party every time I beat a boss or an especially hard level. “Dark Souls 3” is my favorite of the “Dark Souls” series, and is an amazing game worth the frustration.

  1. Uncharted 4 (PS4)

“Uncharted 4” was my favorite game of this year. Even though it was a PS4 exclusive, the game was beautifully designed, with only a couple technical issues. The last game of the “Uncharted” series, “Uncharted 4” wraps up its loose ends wonderfully while giving the player a story that keeps them hooked until the very end. Players again step into the shoes of treasure hunter Nathan Drake, and this time we get some insight on what happened to his family and the eventual start of his treasure hunting career. While it was hard to see the series end, “Uncharted 4” ended on a high note, leaving players satisfied.
