New district first look: Wylie East

Avery Degenhardt

Editor’s note: This is the fifth in a series of profiles on the school’s opponent in next year’s new UIL district, 15-5A.

Enrollment: 1,848

Mascot: Raiders

School Colors: Blue, white, and silver

Distance from Lovejoy: 12 miles (24 minutes) 3000 Wylie East Dr. Wylie, Texas 75098

Year opened: 2007

Raiders’ 2015-16 results (according to SportsDayHS):

Football: 10-2

Volleyball: 14-14

Basketball: 12-14

Girls Basketball: 16-13

Soccer: 13-11

Girls Soccer: 18-2

Baseball: 23-4

Softball: 16-14

Notable Alumni: None

Athletes to watch: Eno Benjamin, Running Back (Class of 2017)

Benjamin is coming off a huge year on the ground. The Iowa Hawkeyes commit rushed for 2,652 yards and 41 touchdowns, giving fits to every defense he faced. Don’t expect the high-powered Raider offense to slow down this year with Benjamin in the backfield for his senior year.
Analysis: With the Raiders being the only school from our previous 10-5A district that has made its way into the new district, don’t expect much to change in regards to Leopard versus Raider matchups. Over the past two years we have seen a number of very competitive battles between the Leopards and the Raiders, so expect that to continue in the years to come.

About the Contributor
Avery Degenhardt, TRL Graphic Designer
Avery joined “Intro To Photography” in eighth  grade with some curiosity, and she quickly learned the basics of photography and quickly improved. She learned to love the craft, and along with her “secret” part-time photoshop in the class, she obtained skills she never imagined she would have with a computer. Applying for newspaper and deciding if she wanted that challenge or not was probably the most difficult choice of her life, but she went through with it. Avery has established her place among the staff and continues to pursue her interest in  graphic art design. As a junior this year, she hopes to improve her skills in digital art and change her haircolor again.
