Leopard swimming will be represented in regional competition at Bruce Eubanks Natatorium in Frisco starting on Feb. 4 with diving, Feb. 5 with swimming prelims, and ending at Feb. 6 with swimming finals.

Head swimming coach Matthew Franks said the team has had amazing energy in practice this week due to the success at the district meet.

It’s going to take everything we have, but from what I can see the team looks as ready as they can be to get the job done,” Franks said.

Senior Ben Ominara said he’s been preparing for regionals differently than the other swimmers.

“I’ve been doing this ultra-short race pace training which allows me to work really hard and intense in a short amount of time because I can only swim for an hour since I have a heart condition,” Ominara said.

On Jan. 28, the boys and girls teams won a pair of district championships at Colleyville Heritage.

Girls placed first in the 200 yard medley relay, consisting of freshman Juliette Pages, sophomore Sloan Carevic, freshman Natalie Womack and junior Emma Ream; the 200 yard freestyle relay, consisting of senior Peyton Sachse, Carevic, Pages and senior Glynn Gallaway; and the 400 yard freestyle relay, consisting of Womack, Sachse, Gallaway and Ream. Individual winners for girls were Ream in the 100 freestyle, Pages in the 100 backstroke, and freshman Sarah Krolnik who won the 1 meter diving title.

Krolnik, named the district’s diver of the meet, said she broke the district record at the meet and felt good about her results.

“I felt really really strong and confident [at the meet] and I think I did good at the meet.” Krolnik said.

The boys team was paced at district by first place efforts from the 200 freestyle relay consisting of freshman James Vaughn, sophomore Grant Stout, senior Brent Powell, and Ominara; and the 400 freestyle relay with junior Brady Duke, Powell, Vaughn, and Ominara. Individually Vaught placed first in the 200 individual medley, and Ominara won district titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Ominara was named district swimmer of the meet, and Franks was named district coach of the year for boys and girls.

Vaughn mentioned he felt he did good individually and relay-wise at district.

“I feel I did really well because individually I improved my times and got a school record,” Vaughn added. “Our relay improved big time and I took home three golds and a silver.”
