A year ago, there was no such thing as a Lovejoy boys 4x400m relay team. Now, these four athletes are one of the best 4x400m relay teams in the district. The team will compete to continue on to the area meet on Thursday.

With the District 10-5A meet concluding Thursday at Wylie ISD Stadium The Red Ledger’s Darby Blaylock tracks down a few of the members on the boys 4×400 relay team that has already set (and broken) the school record. The team consists of junior Aaron Fuller, senior Noah Coffey, junior Ian Engbrock, and sophomore Jason Bensmiller.

The Red Ledger: How do you think this season has been so far?

Fuller: “Better than expected since we didn’t even have a 4×4 team last year and now we are one of the best.”

Coffey: “This season so far is a lot better than expected. We have definitely exceeded Coach Purcell’s expectations for us.”

The Red Ledger: What is different from last year?

Coffey: “Last year we didn’t have enough runners to run the 4×400, mainly because Ian was injured.”

The Red Ledger: (To Fuller) You are in multiple races, how do you prepare for all of these?

Fuller: “I run the 4×4, 400, 200, and long jump. I just go to all the practices.”

The Red Ledger: How are you preparing for the “road to state”?

Engbrock: “We did a lot of conditioning and hard training at the start but now we don’t have to train a lot because we are already prepared.”

The Red Ledger: You guys have already beaten the schools record for the 4×4, what’s next for you?

Coffey: “We have 4 goals for this year, 1. Beat the school record. 2. Break 3:20. 3. Beat McKinney North. 4.  Make it to state. We’ve reached our first goal, twice. And we are very close to breaking 3:20.”
