When it comes to math classes on campus, pre-Calculus teacher Randy Brooks helps students find the answers. Now he sits down with The Red Ledger’s Katie Curry and provides the answers in the following Q&A:

The Red Ledger: How did you get so involved with math?

Brooks: “Mathematics really kind of grew probably from college. I was in engineering in college and went into the telecom industry. It was really focused with managing the amount of phone calls online which involves pretty focused math, not high levels of math but working with a lot of mid-level math.”

The Red Ledger: Did you always know you were going to be a math teacher?

Brooks: “Actually, I never knew. I was kind of working in the industry for a while and just kind of came across people I was having to teach a lot of math that I thought they should’ve already had so I decided to go back and see if I could help on the front end.”

The Red Ledger: Where did you go to high school?

Brooks: “I went to high school in Joshua, TX which is south of Fort Worth.”

The Red Ledger: What do you do outside of school?

Brooks: “Now that I’m in the education industry and looking at ways to advance that, I kind of have a vision on moving education online. So looking at getting and trying to get high school classes online, a lot of the outside time and professional time is kind of focused on how to build and work that because it’s going pretty slow.”

The Red Ledger: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?

Brooks: “You know, we’ve been talking about that and it’s kind of where we are. We have looked at opportunities for moving and over time we have kind of come back to ‘we built our house, we got the land we wanted, we got the house designed (I designed the house), we found the things we liked and built the house so we can’t find ourselves to move away from it.”

The Red Ledger: What is your favorite meal to eat?

Brooks: “Probably, it really sticks with, pizza. Kind of on an Italian sausage, pepperoni, run now. It rotates pretty good.”

The Red Ledger: What’s something your students wouldn’t know about you?

Brooks: “I have a picture in my college yearbook of me dunking a basketball in a dunking contest.”
