It may be one of the most overlooked sports on campus, but the wrestling team doesn’t let the lack of attention slow them down. Recently The Red Ledger’s Darby Blaylock caught up with senior wrestler Hunter Evans to talk about the ins and outs of wrestling and how the team will fare the rest of the year.

The Red Ledger: What is the point of wrestling, how do you win?

Evans: “You can win by points fall or tech fall. You get points for take downs, near fall, almost pinning a guy. Or you get points for escaping. Fall is obviously you pin the guy with both shoulders on the ground. Tech fall is when you beat someone by 15 points.”

The Red Ledger: Is wrestling a team sport?

Evans: “Absolutely, you have to rely on your teammates to win, to win duels and other team events. It’s an individual sport when you’re out on the mat but overall it’s a team effort.”

The Red Ledger: If you do really well and your team doesn’t can you move on?

Evans: “Personally you can go on to state but there is a team aspect as well.”

The Red Ledger: How has the team done so far?

Evans: “Well we are just getting rolling and the team is looking pretty good this year.”

The Red Ledger: How have you done so far?

Evans: “I just came in from football, so I haven’t gotten a chance to wrestle really.”

The Red Ledger: How is it being a teenager and having to watch and even lose weight?

Evans: “I mean it’s all done in regulation, where you’re not doing any serious harm to your body. It’s all just done within a system designed to keep you safe.”

The Red Ledger: How do you lose weight?

Evans: “Working out hard, eating right.”

The Red Ledger: Starving yourself?

Evans: “Not at all.”

The Red Ledger: How do you train/practice?

Evans: “We lift weights and do technique in the morning, and then wrestle for 2 hours after school and live wrestling with each other.”

The Red Ledger: How did you get started wrestling?

Evans: “I wanted to be a part of the team in middle school and have been a part of it ever since.”

The Red Ledger: What is your favorite move?

Evans: “Anything that pins a guy.”

The Red Ledger: How far did all get last year?

Evans: “As a team we finished third in the district, this year we are hoping to win a district title.”
