From a 1-3 start to a tournament win, the boys basketball team will enter district play with a winning record. With District 10-5A play set to begin Friday, The Red Ledger’s Darby Blaylock caught up with senior Greg Watson in this Q&A.

The Red Ledger: How does the team look this year?

Watson: “Surprising to the other teams we look good, because when you look at us we wouldn’t seem to be that good but we’ve beaten teams that are much more athletic than us. When we played Keller, Keller was expected to blow us out of the water and we ended up losing by like 3 and we should have won. I think we are proving to other teams that they need to respect us. I don’t think we had respect at the beginning of the season.”

The Red Ledger: How do you think you will do when it comes to district?

Watson: “We are in a very tough district but I believe we can win district, if we play basketball like we know how to and play at the top of our game. We’ve been building and when we hit district we are going to hit the ground running.”

The Red Ledger: You all have had quite the pre-season, how do you think it will carry on when it comes to district play?

Watson: “At the end of district I hope to be undefeated. But if not i think we are  going to have two or less losses. But I think we can win our district.”

The Red Ledger: Your first district game is against McKinney North, how are you preparing for the big game?

Watson: “Obviously Mckinney North is a tough opponent, we lost twice to them last year but we are a completely new team and so are they so we aren’t looking at the record last year or what they looked like we are just going day by day and getting better. We have a great scouting program so we get to know what we are coming up against before we face them. We just need to prepare for it and know how to contain it and handle it once we get there.”

The Red Ledger: What’s your game plan?

Watson: “District play we are just going to take it one game at a time and not overlook anybody. Like I said we have a tough district, any team on any given night can beat anybody so we just need to stay focused on the game at hand play day by day.”

The Red Ledger: The team consists of seniors and sophomores, how is that?

Watson: “I think it is a good balance we have five returning varsity players, one is a sophomore four are seniors. It’s good because we have the experience for last season and have senior that have been here for four years. I think having the sophomores is good because it’s just building the program. In the years to come I honestly think the sophomores as seniors, the program will be one of the top programs in the state because of the experience they are going to have and athletically they are very gifted.”

The Red Ledger: You have two brothers on the team, how do they impact the team?

Watson: “I don’t even think of them as brothers I see them as best friends. I hang out with them all the time outside of school so I see it. They never fight. They bring the comedic relief to the team because both of them are funny. They make it fun.”
