The lack of spirit

The lack of spirit

Rachel Jackson, Staff Reporter

Most of us get a picture in our head when hearing the words school spirit. Whether it’s senior overalls or Friday night at a football game, there’s some mental image.

However, it’s something we seem to be lacking here on campus.

Recently, enthusiasm for our school has been rather devastating. Nowadays it’s considered “cool” to skip the game to go to a haunted house or the mall and it takes everything Coach Cox has to pump some energy into us at pep rallies. It’s almost as though we’re praising each other for refusing to be involved with our school and that shouldn’t be the goal for school spirit. We should enjoy being a part of the Lovejoy community because, in all honesty, we excel in many things.

Also, why is it that not as many students attend the tennis matches or debate tournaments as much as they attend the football games? I mean, we may be involved in different things, but we do have one thing in common, we want the Leopards to win. So why don’t we support each extracurricular our school has to offer?

Every Friday morning my mom puts a ticket to the football game (whether home or away) on the kitchen counter, expecting me to go because when she was my age that was the norm for her school. But we don’t have the same enthusiasm for our school as her fellow classmates did.

We have hope though. This senior class does have a select few with the conviction to bring us through these dark times. But if we don’t step up to their level, then next year, when they leave, all of our spirit will leave with them. So go to the games, take part in the dress up days, and even make some spirit wear because one day you’ll think back to the “glory days” and wish that you had enjoyed it more when you had the chance.
