With spooky spirit in the air, some people take advantage of the autumn chill to get a thrill. Animation teacher Ray Cooper and his family were just some of those that took part in the October 17 Zombie Walk in downtown McKinney.

The Coopers found out about the zombie walk while on the McKinney Square for Oktoberfest.

“They had this pamphlet hanging there, so [my wife and I] took a picture of it; thought it might be cool to do,” Cooper said.

Upon deciding to participate, Cooper and his family had to prepare costumes.

“We went to the halloween shop,” Cooper said. “We knew we wanted to do makeup so we bought some of the gray grease makeup I guess and some of the red and black and some fake blood.”

They then came up with simple backstories to fit their clothes.

“I’m [was] wearing just like a regular tie and shirt and khakis like I was a person who got attacked at work and became a zombie and my daughters gonna be a soccer zombie girl,” Cooper said.

The walk was for a good cause with 100 percent of the net proceeds going to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

“There weren’t many people, because it was the first year they did this,” Cooper said. “There were some really cool costumes. I saw some people that really got into it, more than I did.  It was all for a good cause- all the proceeds go to the American Red Cross. I enjoyed it, I had a lot of fun. Alot of them were like, ‘oh, thats neat,’ but there were a lot of people saying, ‘what’s going on here?’ It was interesting. I look forward to doing it again next year. I think that each year it will have more participants.”
