The gaming community has seen a recent influx of 8-bit games, good and bad, meant to bring gamers young and old a feel of the good old NES days. Fortunately, Yacht Club Games’ new title Shovel Knight, fits the bill perfectly.
Players take the role of Shovel Knight, who, instead of wielding a monstrous sword, wields a simple, but very effective, shovel. Shovel Knight is tasked with defeating “The Order of No Quarter” a skeevy group of knights and enchanters, so that he may rescue his partner, Shield Knight.
The graphics are 8 bit and are not anything to drag on about, but they give the game a classical feel which is very well done. Gameplay is amazing. It feels like an old school NES game, but with modern mechanics added in to make it even better. The story is very well thought out and the gameplay is downright addicting. Shovel Knight is $15 on Steam, 3DS, and Wii U, and is worth every penny.
While the PC version is definitely the best technologically, the 3DS version is also very fun. The PC version is best played with a controller (XBOX 360 or NES controller will work great) and will not drop as many inputs as the 3DS version, but really, the differences are almost minimal, as it is obvious the developers took time optimizing the game for both systems.
