Going east for education
September 8, 2014
Visiting Europe is on the bucket list of countless people and next summer students on campus will have that chance as part of a school sponsored trip led by social studies teacher Beverly Smith.
“I decided to sponsor a trip to celebrate my 30th year in education,” world geography teacher Beverly Smith said. “This a milestone. We will be traveling to London, Paris, Florence, and Rome.”
Smith hopes to spread global awareness as well as offering the opportunity to experience different cultures throughout this trip.
“I am teaching a section of world geography and AP European History this year so it’s a good fit,” Smith said.
Students of all grade levels are encouraged to sign up.
“I want to go for lots of reasons,” freshman Micah Leightnar said. “Mainly because my dad and I take a lot of road trips and I’ve been almost everywhere in the U.S. but my next goal is to travel the world and this would be a great opportunity to achieve that.”
During this twelve day tour in summer 2015, students will get to see the usual sites while learning about European history.
“I also wanna go for art purposes because you get a chance to see the actual paintings and experience that,” Leightnar said.
Smith invites everyone who is interested to attend the informational meeting at 8:15 pm in the library on Monday following open house.
“[The meeting is about] the tour of Europe for parents and students who are interested in traveling on our trip in June,” Smith said. “There are going to be door prizes and the general itinerary of where we are traveling in Europe.”
Students look forwards to the trip for different reasons.
“I’ve never been that far out of the country,” freshmen Jake Jones said. “But I’m excited for the food.”
