Emerging on to the alternative music scene with a unique sound and a unique spelling of their name, Chvrches has sparked interest with their individual style and an 80’s synth pop influence on  their debut album, The Bones of What You Believe.

The latest British invasion continues as this new trio comes full force into the U.S Billboard charts hitting number 12 on Billboard’s Top Alternative Songs. The positive reception from the media has been constant since the album release. With Alternative Press giving this album 4.5 out of 5 stars and a solid 4 out of 5 stars from Rolling Stone, Chvrches debut is a favorite of critics.

Though their most praised and popular songs on the album are “The Mother We Share” and “Gun”, “By the Throat” and “You Caught the Light” are the most unique and intriguing songs. The sound is a rather strange mix of indie and synthpop.

Though most of the reviews of Chvrches are fairly supportive, I seem to have the unpopular opinion of finding their music unfortunately repetitive and lacking energy. It might just be a case of the first album blues, but I wasn’t too impressed with the tracks or the musicality of their sound.

Though the similarity of the songs give the band a staple style, their songs are a bit too conformed to one another. Relying heavily on synthesizers only adds to the repetitiveness of the music.

Chvrches produces their own music and has developed a distinct sound for their first album. Though most of their songs lacked energy and intricacy the 80’s throwback influence along with the heavy synthesizer use is unique and fresh for many listeners, even if Chvrches lack key components to make their album a bigger musical success.

Chvrches will be playing at Edgefest Music Festival in Frisco on April 26, 2014.
