Doug Laman, Movie Critic

After a fun Golden Globes (which featured some hilarity from Robert Downey Jr. and deserved wins for Her and American Hustle), it seems the Oscar Race is finally taking form, which is a really good occurrence considering the fact that nominations will be announced Thursday.

I’m thinking Saving Mr. Banks, despite being a fantastic movie, might be out of the race, if only due to some slightly subdued box office numbers and a smaller presence than expected on other award shows. On the other hand, Dallas Buyers Club and Her have been steadily gaining momentum recently and should be shoo-ins for Best Picture. In terms of the acting categories, I’ll resign to myself that Scarlett Johansson’s breathtaking performance in Her will go without a nomination and put another underrated performance in her place; Octavia Spencer in Fruitvale Station.

In the Best Supporting Actor category, I’m afraid Jonah Hill is not going to get a nomination, a travesty considering how amazing he was in The Wolf of Wall Street. Instead, I’ll put Michael Fassbender in 12 Years A Slave back in the race, while a bunch of buzz for Daniel Bruhl in Rush makes me strongly consider putting him back in. But considering how stunning James Gandolfini was in the equally terrific Enough Said, I think he deserves the final slot, bumping out Will Forte (who could make it back in considering how Nebraska fares in other categories) and completing a category filled with surprises and superb acting.

While the Best Actor and Actress field remains unchanged, I’m also covering a few extra categories this week (namely the Screenplay, Best Animated Features and Best Original Song nominations), which I’ve compiled by looking at how other awards ceremonies have handled these respective categories. We’ll see how they’ll play out Thursday, at which time I’ll post an extra special edition of the Oscar Run discussing how my predictions fared and what the race looks like at that time.
