12 Days of Christmas: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

Doug Laman, Staff Reporter/Movie Critic

Two guys obsessed with marijuana, and all of the adventures that ensue because of it, wouldn’t seem like the template for a great Christmas movie, but then again, the Harold & Kumar movies have been defying the logic of conventional cinematic comedy for quite a while now. And even without seeing the prior two movies in this film series, all of the duos Holiday shenanigans in A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas wind up coming together nicely, even if the story can seem a bit slight at times.

Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) have managed to go off in very different paths in their lives; Harold is financially successful and married, while Kumar lives a crummy life consisting of constant drug use and a quirky neighbor. Still, despite such life changes, a mysterious package winds up bringing the duo back together again, and soon they get caught up in holiday-themed escapades including an encounter with Claymotion, a mobster and Neil Patrick Harris.

Vulgarity is omnipresent in modern day comedy, with each newest Judd Apatow or Jackass movie trying to get even more yuks from off-color content than the last. That being said, few get as crazy as this flick, with absurdity reigning supreme through all of the films sequences (which, even when viewed in 2D, seem tailor made for an extra third dimension). The best example of when the farcical and human expertly merge is a scene featuring Neil Patrick Harris. Going above and beyond every other actor in the film, he manages to run the gamut of over the top deplorably, perhaps most memorably when his real life husband is depicted as his drug dealer.

His unhinged scenes are pretty much the norm for the rest of the movie, with Cho and Penn doing an excellent job at retaining that tone consistently throughout the film. With the duo also having some great chemistry in their dialogue exchanges, they make sure the film remains an enjoyable and hilarious affair, even if the plot does seem a bit slight at times. That’s really all one could complain about A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas; it does it’s comedic insanity so well that it’s truly hard to ignore it’s unique blend of the Holiday Season and crass comedy.
